I've just submitted the finished manuscript for my next book - Storytelling for Magic - which should be out in about a year's time. I can't wait to share it with you so here's an extract! (scroll down for upcoming classes and events) ~~~ STORYTELLING FOR MAGIC ~~~ The Bard, the Skald, the Poet; by whatever name these magical figures are known to weave magic. Specifically, these magicians weave magic with their words. Often spoken or sung, sometimes written, their power is such that they were thought to be able to change the luck of a battle, bring healing and immortality, and to lay low with a curse, just with a few well-chosen sounds. Taliesin (Welsh), Orpheus (Greek), William Shakespeare (English), Bragi (Norse); all recognized as skilled wordsmiths who changed the world of their audience. Just as magicians find magic words in their grimoires, bards transform all language into magic. But how? In the stories, this skill is often given to the bard from divine sources. Taliesin, for example, acquired “the Awen” (Divine Inspiration) through an apparent accident after his year and a day stirring the cauldron of the goddess and witch, Ceridwen. In Greek mythology, the muses grant their artistic devotees inspiration and the divine spark of genius that makes their art sing. In Norse mythology Odin worked hard to get close enough to earn a sip of the mead of inspiration from a giant, and then carried all of it back to the gods, dripping some of it into the land of humans. The magic in the music and the words, then, comes from a union between devotion and the divine. In Folklore, particularly skilled musicians may be said to have been blessed with their ability to enchant an audience by the Faery Queen herself. The bard puts in the work to develop their skills and make space for the fire of inspiration, and the divine muse pours through them. Within the Order of Bards, Ovates, and Druids (OBOD) all members begin as bards because the language, stories, and patterns we learn give us a foundation for everything that comes after. Within the witchcraft tradition of Reclaiming, a tradition known for its powerful and creative rituals, ritualists often work with stories and myths in our rituals because they hold keys to magical secrets, and by going on a journey through the story with the protagonist we transform ourselves, and the world. So in March we'll dive into working with the Divine Lovers, in April we'll meet the Red Goddess, in May we'll dance with the Wild God, and in June we'll dive deep with the Bright Beloved.
