Hello dear ones, Happy Equinox! Whether you're slipping into the hot season or turning toward the dark, I hope it brings many blessings your way. SCROLL DOWN FOR LINKS TO TONIGHT'S WORKSHOP - Compass of Pleasure - AND MY NEXT SONG! Yes, I know, it's a bit short notice... but I've also included all the upcoming workshop dates and themes for this year at the end of this email, so do see what you'd like to add to your calendar! ~~~ Musings ~~~ I think it's fairly normal to need a break after a big project, and it doesn't get much bigger than 12 years researching a single thread for a PhD. It's been about 18 months since it was finally over and all rubber stamped and both research and writing generally have been taking a back seat to running the Crimson Coven Collective, teaching classes, storytelling again, and learning how to make music. But as the Autumn crept closer I noticed the urge to pull out my writing hat. I picked up a short story which has begun turning into a novella, the plot began to unfold again... My next book contract is a title on Ritual Skills, and suddenly I'm excited to add to it again (rather than just excited to have it in the world). And I've begun to feel that philosophical nature of mine wake up, like a sleeping dragon that once hoarded ideas but has been sleeping so long many of them have become dust, or at least gotten a little dusty. Of course, here, we've just passed the Autumn Equinox and the turning of the sky to grey and the leaves to fire (and the café menus to "pumpkin spice"... which confused me for a long time as it doesn't taste like pumpkins at all!) signifies the start of a new season in two ways. Autumn, yes, but also the new academic year. Apart from a couple of years where I worked out what I really wanted out of University, I've been in this cycle for most of my life, so it's no surprise that the easing of the outward facing, sunny, summer season would slide back into books and papers and a love of words. But it is ever so lovely to find that part of me was not gone, burnt out by the initiatory experience of a PhD, but was just resting. Thank you to the music program that fed the part of me that loves to learn, but also gave me that healing space to let my mind recover from the ordeals. (Much gratitude to Emma Back for that healing journey.) Last weekend I took to the stage with Milly jackdaw for our Shakespeare X folktale show "Thereby Hangs a Tale". It went down a storm, with a storm outside! And then this weekend just gone, I was at Star Club, supporting the new students in learning the foundation of the Star Club model. We were lucky enough to have Dr Robert Plimer join us with a talk on ancient Egyptian initiatory magic (broadly speaking), and oh the joy of being engaged in academic discussion! Even though it wasn't a topic I know, there's something about that style of engagement that suits me and I came away inspired to follow this thread my heart always returns to... So I dusted off some papers and got curious - where does the research path lead next? Well, first I've got a deadline on a book, and I'll be sharing extracts of that on my Patreon... but watch this space. It's about time I started developing that Philosophy of Fairies that I've been mulling over for a decade or more... what might that look like, I wonder? This week I encountered someone describing a belief in Fairies as being seen of as the most "irrational" of religious-style beliefs... but I don't agree that it should be. Do you? ~~~ News ~~~ Coming soon... out Friday 13th October! Two Wolves, No Masters - a song to invite you into action, in community. And yes, for those of you who caught the Goblin Circus shows you might remember that my Little Red Riding Hood grew up to be part of a werewolf pack, finding home in both the wildwood and the modern world. And Tonight...And a whole weekend of witchery next week!I'm really excited to be presenting at the weekend long online conference "Season of the Witch"* On Friday 6th October I'm presenting on "Dancing with The Lover: solo sexual magic."
